As a physician, I find it important that preclinical research, including animal experimental research, ultimately contributes to knowledge about humans and to improved patient care. I am concerned with the question of how predictive results from animal models can be for effects in humans. This translation to humans is often complex, and despite many alternatives, animal models continue to provide valuable new insights in this translation process. For example, it is very important to evaluate the safety and efficacy of new medicines in animals before they are first administered to humans. Within the Central Committee for Animal Procedures, I wish to contribute—from my clinical perspective and involvement in patient care—to a careful evaluation of project proposals, wherein both scientific value and significance for humans are central.
