The purpose of a non-technical summary (NTS) is to provide information about a project before the start of the study. This helps clarify which studies involving laboratory animals are being conducted in the Netherlands.

We distinguish the following project categories:

  • Fundamental research
  • Translational or applied research
  • Regulatory research or routine production
  • Research into environmental protection in the interest of human beings or animals
  • Species conservation research
  • Education and training
  • Forensic research
  • Maintenance of colonies of genetically altered animals

Information provided in a NTS

Each NTS provides an overview of the project, including the number of animals involved. The NTS also includes the following details:

  • the project’s objectives and corresponding project category
  • the potential benefits of the project
  • the procedures animals are subjected to and the level of discomfort they may experience
  • whether animals are reused, re-homed or killed at the end of the research
  • how the 3Rs are applied
  • a description of the animal species involved

NTS from 2021 onwards listed on European website

These research summaries have been published on the European Union (EU) website since 1 June 2021, together with NTS from other EU countries.

Finding a NTS on the EU website

The European website uses a different numbering system than the Dutch serial numbers assigned to NTSs. If you are looking for a Dutch NTS on the European website, you can search this list (page in Dutch) for the summary title or the Dutch serial number. The European serial number is provided in the same row, and you can use this number to find a specific NTS on the European website. We update this list every two weeks.
